Ken was someone who everyone in Waitara knew. He lived next door to our special friends, the Streets, for many years. However, it was only when we bought our beach house near to Ken and Barbara's home at Onaero that I really got to know him personally. Since that time I have been so impressed with his life of service to the community and for me his kindness and generosity. He was always offering to help in one way or another. One thing that took a huge amount of time was that when we were not in New Zealand he regularly stopped in at our house to check that all was well. If there was a problem he dealt with it without even contacting us. We are so grateful for all he did for us. It has been so lovely to see how happy he has been over the past few years - after the sad time when Barb died. He and Alison were enjoying their life, building a new house together and taking the time to travel. It is so sad that his life was cut short. I am filled with gratitude for his service to so many. I will miss him very much.

Jilly and I are in shock. Ken visited us in Tauranga on Saturday, the day before the tragedy. It was great seeing him so happy and contented. He talked glowingly about his life with his late wife Barb at Onaero Beach, and now with Alison in the retirement village. Everyone loved Ken. So vivacious, considerate, helpful and generous. What a character! So sad to lose you, Ken.
