I am looking at a photograph of the Sacred Heart convent Petone School junior rugby team dated 1950 which hangs in my den.

Father Dolan was a recent arrival in the parish and showed immediate eagerness to become involved in the school's rugby teams.

Father Dolan towers over the team. I was aged 9 when that photograph was taken.

RIP Bishop Owen.

I remember Bishop Owen visiting St.Joseph Waitara. I had a child called Owen in my class. Bishop Owen made a comment about what a great name this boy had. Loved that sense of humour.

On behalf of the Joyce Family we would like to extend our condolences to all who knew & loved Father Dolan or Dolie as we knew him. He was a dear friend of many here in Waitara when he was the Parish Priest many many years ago. He was an avid rugby supporter, coming to watch games at our house at 3 am in the morning, he & my Dad had many laughs, many discussions, lots of good times. Even after he left Waitara he would always drop in if in the Naki for a quick visit & cuppa then off again he would go, he must have done thousands of miles in his cars. A huge man not only in Stature but of heart as well. Fondly remembered by us all. Barry (dec) Dot, Jo, Paula, Kathryn Joyce
Rest in Peace Dolie

The then Father Dolan married my parents Anna and Peter Willoughby at St Brigids Church in Feilding on October 7th 1967.
Once a week for months leading up to the wedding Mum and Dad had "classes" with Father Dolan as Mum was converting to Catholicism. Mum remembers Father Dolan as an avid smoker back then. He said he smoked when stressed. Mum said each week his huge wooden ashtray (with a silver bucket on the inside) got higher and higher with cigarette butts hahaha.
My parents remember him as a very kind man with a great sense of humour.

Thank you so much for your care & support when I taught at Waitara Convent School in 1972. One day I was out in the very windy playground, "On duty" & pregnant. You said, "You shouldn't be out in this wind!" Our friendship was ongoing! RIP you dear man.
