Brian (Shorty) Sanger was always good fun and a great travelling companion. Over the years I travelled 3 times with him and have some great memories.
In the 1980´s the Taranaki Rugby Supporters club did a number of trips to the South island to support our team. Shorty and Jean were on one of those trips. I recall on one occasion we were sitting in the cathedral square in Christchurch and I was discussing with Shorty when the Wizard was expected to arrive. A man who must have been a foreign tourist who did not know about the Christchurch Wizard was sitting close by. He must have thought he was surrounded by lunatics as he speedily left with a scared look on his face!
In 2012 I accompanied Shorty on an All Black supporters trip to South America. The games were in Argentina but we also visited Chile, Peru and Brazil. At the end of the tour I was privileged to spend time with some friends of the Sanger family in a town to the North of Rio De Jannero. On the first day in Buenos Aries Shorty went for a walk with some other tour members. He was wearing his baggy shorts with his wallet in his pocket. He came back to the hotel room with his shorts no wallet. He had been pickpocketed. I gave him some pesos and promptly got pickpocketed again! From there on I financed him through the rest of the trip and he promptly repaid me when we got home. While I looked after him with the money Shorty was great in looking after me when I was not well on that trip.
In 2016 we joined another tour to Canada and Alaska including a Cruise on the "Inside Passage" from Alaska to Vancouver. Great Fun.
Farewell Shorty. Unfortunately, I will not be at the funeral but with watch on line.
