Bryce SMITH Obituary

Passed away peacefully at Summerset Mountain View, on Wednesday 18 February 2026, aged 98 years. Dearly loved husband of Joni (dec) for 79 years. Loved father of Robert, Patricia (dec) and Peter. Cherished Grandad/Pop and great-grandfather of young Bryce, Faolan, Tristan & Harvey, Isla, Rona & Skye, and extended family/whānau of Jan, Tony, Claire and Katie. Born in Dunedin, Bryce attended Teachers College there, and lived and taught in Nelson, Moana, and Paroa before enjoying 60 plus years in New Plymouth. Over 30 years were in his teaching and administrative capacities: as Principal at West End School, as Taranaki Rural Advisor to Schools, as Senior Inspector. As Kaumātua Board Member for the Palmerston North Training College helped enable the revitalisation of Te reo Māori in education training. A Rotarian, keen golfer, and fly fisherman, Bryce was always willing to help and pass on information. He and Joni always welcomed all into their Devon Street home.
