Goodbye Charles, we shared our early professional life together, as young anaesthetic registrars in Auckland, swapping on call, studying for exams, miss you.

You were such a Humble entertaining person to work with. I am so sad to hear of you passing way too soon. Much love to all your beautiful children and family who you so fondly use to talk about with me.
Rest in Peace Charles

I first met Charles over 60 years ago when we started primary school together. We later moved on to St Pats College in Wellington and then down to Otago University. Since then many things have changed, but some things always remained the same. I always remember Charles as a good friend who was kind, generous, hard working and intelligent. We had many fun adventures growing up with our friends, exploring various tramping areas and sailing on Wellington harbour. After leaving Dunedin our lives took us to different places, but we still kept in contact. Sadly that has now come to an end much sooner than we expected. My thoughts are with Charles´ family during this time, and I thank you so much for sharing Charles with so many other people. He will be greatly missed.

Shocked and saddened to hear of the loss of such a kind and wise gentleman who I had the pleasure of working with in public and private practice and discussing a wide range of topics. Have not seen you recently but will not be forgotten!

Charles,
You were a very special man; no ego, no hubris, a gentle, kind and compassionate man with a piercing intelligence and laconic wit. You humbled yourself at the expense of others that needed the accolades, but were cursory to you. You were loved and respected by all. Your family is a tribute to you. A very premature loss, sail well mate.

He improved the lives of so many-family, friends, thousands of patients, and many colleagues. Charles combined deep knowledge with practical skill, empathy, and a genuine interest in helping others succeed.

Such sad news. I started my tramping adventures with
Charles & co exploring the Tararuas & Orongorongas at secondary school & later Silverpeaks at Uni. Fun filled times. Lots of gr8 memories. Condolences to Tom, James & family.

I have known Charles for over forty years, from Medical School in Wellington, then as junior doctors and trainee anaesthetists in Auckland. We ended up as Consultant Anaesthetists together at North Shore Hospital and in private practice for 30 years.
He was always generous with his time and advice, worked extremely hard, was passionate about sailing, and was extremely proud of his family.
Our last memory of Charles was meeting him on his bicycle in Auckland, and hearing him tell us about his recent trip to Capetown to visit Caitlin and meet his new grandson for the first time. It was wonderful seeing him so happy.

We are terribly sorry to hear the news of Charlie´s passing. Devastating. We have such fond memories of good times spent together over the years. He was a medical school classmate a professional colleague and a good friend. Our condolences to all his family and close friends. You will be missed Charlie. Travel well. Mark and Suz.

I want to say a few words about Charles.
I still remember clearly the time we made ceramics and did the Raku firing at his place. That day and his beautiful space are still in my mind. He really loved art, and he supported me in such a kind and honest way - even buying my work and encouraging me.
Charles had a warm heart and a very gentle smile.
He was a person who made others feel comfortable and welcomed.
I am very grateful that I could spend those moments with him.
I will always remember his kindness.

The gentlest and most humble man I´ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. Charles your gracious spirit was so unique and it was a privilege to have witnessed these beautiful qualities so consistently in such a busy ol' world. You will be remembered with much respect & deep appreciation.

This is devastating to read. I was in the medical school class with Charles and appreciated his support and encouragement during those study days. Great colleague in our registrar years. His parents kindly let me stay as I travelled between Otago and Auckland. My thoughts are with his family.

I am really shocked to hear of Charle´s death . My condolences to all his family and friends . He will be missed .i have fond memories of sailing Crescendo with him ,Tom and John. I expected to catch-up at the 36 th americas cup that basically Covid cancelled. I did not realize that my last flippant Facebook post in august would be the last. Fair winds Charles I will miss you .

Gee, I will miss your wit and being the only person who can get away with calling me Gerry. Life is really hard when the good guys are taken too soon. A generous man, who is also a great anaesthetist. I will miss you.

Charles was a very kind neighbour in Herne Bay to my late parents and to myself. I appreciated his support and good humour, in particular the invitations to happy hour next door. My condolences to his family.

We shared many happy times together at university in Wellington. The parties at the Hollings house on Nicholson Road were epic. So often Charles was our driver in the family Valiant which could seat four in the front! So sad at this news and my condolences to all the family.

So shocked to hear about Charles´s sudden demise! Outstanding, wonderful human being! I had the privilege of working with Charles on many occasions both at Auckland and Ascot Hospitals.. His face portrayed, kindness, empathy and love! So shocked and sorry to hear this news. Charles was my neighbour when he lived at Winn Road in the 1980s and was the best neighbour ever! Charles was just starting out as an anaesthetist then as I was then so we had lots in common, both work and a love of sailing. He was a kind man and so helpful to me. My condolences to the family.

My love and condolences to Charles´s Family

I am a recovery RN and I worked with Charles at Ascot Hospital for a long time! I too remember him as a kind man with a great sense of humour. He used to call me Bella Donna and for all that time I thought he was paying me a compliment. It wasn´t until a few years ago that I found out it´s a form of Deadly Nightshade! I like to think that maybe he did intend it to mean `beautiful lady´ sometimes!

I worked with Charles at the Adventist and Ascot hospital am an R N and Charles was a wonderful kind and caring Dr with a great sense of humour,I enjoyed working with him and am so sad to hear of his passing , sail safe Charles cheers Sue

Sending all my love to Charles's family, especially his adored children. I'm so glad I came to NZ this year and got to see him again. He was his usual kind, generous, loving self. The rose in the photo was planted in my house in Inverness and when he visited he asked me to call it Charlie's rose, so that is what it will always be.

Shocked at the sudden loss of a friend and colleague. We trained together in Auckland but though he was ahead of me, we immediately connected when he found out he was in my eldest brother, Paresh's, Medical School class at Otago Medical school.

May his soul rest in peace. May the Almighty give the family strength to weather this immense loss.
