Sorry to hear of Clive's passing (Mr Wheeler to me). Back in the 70's I spent many hours swimming the Inglewood 25 metre laps under his watch. I remember hiding from the rain under his umbrella at carnivals all around Taranaki and that umbrella pacing the side of the pool and also providing the odd prod. Condolences to the family.

Clive was an outstanding individual who spent his life teaching skills to people, developing swimmers into strong human beings and being a mentor for me over 30 years. Sitting watching his funeral service from Queensland although sad, it brings a smile to my face reliving those memories I have of our times together. All the times sitting , drinking and listening to his yarns and words of wisdom. You were an inspiration to many coaches, swimmers and the swimming community. R.I.P Clive. Donna Bouzaid

Clive had remarkable insight into what made each of his swimmers tick. This ability allowed him to give them tailored messages that helped them be successful competitors. Often, his words of wisdom helped them exceed Clive´s expectations and their own.
As well as developing their potential as swimmers, he gave them excellent life skills which are still of benefit to them many years on.
He always expected his swimmers to be disciplined. When they failed, they did press-ups on the pool deck until he decided they were chastened enough to return to the water.
He had a sense of humour and a sparkle in his eye and clearly enjoyed being a coach. His swimmers respected and admired him and so did their parents.
Rest in peace Clive.

Clive was a remarkable man, swim coach and mentor. He coached me as a youngster in the 70's in Inglewood and onto Taranaki Swimming. A ready smile, a quick wit, with a generosity of time and knowledge. He then went on to coach, mentor and be involved with my children as they embarked on their swimming journey for Taranaki and New Zealand. What a wonderful legacy for a wonderful man.
