Denis was a nice man with a great sense of humour. After mass when we would sit and talk with other parishioners, Denis would smile and then switch off the lights which gave us a cue that it was time to go home. Will miss our conversations Denis. Rest in Peace. Our thoughts are with the family.

Dear Bernadette and family, Sending you love and prayers. Denis was a special man - a true gentleman! I will really miss his presence at mass, and his refreshing sense of humour. I remember Denis gave a great speech at Father Kevin Burke's celebration of being a priest. The bit I remember most was Denis saying - "the pay is not great being a priest, but the retirement benefits are "out of this world" I'm sure Denis is also enjoying these amazing retirement benefits in Heaven. RIP

Denis was always so kind and warm towards me and my siblings. Attending mass will not be the same without seeing you.

So sorry my parents and family were unable to attend your final service today. Rest in love and peace Denis x

To Dear Bernadette, and the Garcia Family,

We were truly saddened to hear of your loss, which in turn is our loss also.
Mum and Dad (Brian and Beryl Joyce) have thoroughly enjoyed Dennis's company and they have shared many a good laugh over the years together!
I will quote mum, "The parish just won't be the same". He will be truly missed.

I have not known Dennis for long, however I too loved his humor on Facebook! I will greatly miss his friendliness.

Dennis, May our Lord who has called you, receive you into his open arms, and may the angels lead you into paradise, and the Martyrs welcome you home.
You will be greatly received!

I was so sorry to hear that Denis passed away. He was such a lovely, witty, sincere human being...one in a million. I have very fond memories of spending time at the family home on Devon Street when we were young. My fondest memory is when Mary and I cut our hair believing Denis would actually glue it on his head! Love to you all at this time xx

This morning I saw in the internet version of the Taranaki Daily News the death notice for Denis Garcia.
To all the family, especially Martin and John whom I remember from FDMC days I offer my sincere sympathy.
With his recent death a curtain has come down on so much of your own lives, leaving no doubt, happy memories of years that have passed so quickly.
From the articles about local events written by him of 50 years ago' I received much enjoyment.
May the Good Lord welcome Denis home with outstretched arms, and may he now be forever at peace.
Prayerful remembrance promised,
Declan G Thompson. (now, an 86 year old, living in retirement in Sydney.) ([email protected])

My condolences to the family. Denis was my boss when, aged 16 in 1969, I started as a cadet reporter and, like dozens - if not hundreds - of others he introduced me to the basics of newspaper writing, and later careers in wordsmithing. He was firm but fair. Never particularly cross, and always nurturing. "Firm" was when, mid-70s on a subsequent stint on the Daily News and with day shifts an honour, a colleague and I returned from the snooker hall further along Currie St mid-morning to find him there (he always started at 1pm). Well, we didn't get morning shifts together again. And I enjoyed seeing him in Fitzroy in recent years, or scurrying in or out of the library for his 50 Years Ago column. RIP, Denis.
