I remember Des well as my woodwork teacher at Highlands Intermediate in the early 60s, such a nice gentleman and we often saw him walking on the Te Henui walkway.
Des Griffin, full of concentration.

I'm sure a number of bowlers around Taranaki will be deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Des Griffin. "Griff" as his long-time skip David Bennett referred to him as, was a terrific draw bowler, tenacious, methodical, non-judgmental, accurate and successful. He was a gentleman. Following in the footsteps of his father - a centre titleholder in both Auckland and Taranaki - Des took up bowls in 1972 at the West End club. He won five Taranaki titles, becoming the first West End member to win the coveted Gold Star award. His titles came in the champion-of-champions pairs (1982), the open triples (1983), the Christmas pairs (1984), the champion-of-champions fours (1994), and best of all, the Taranaki Open fours (1996). He was a regular at the Dominion tournament, finishing fifth twice in the fours and a Taranaki representative. Des' memory will live on for many years to come. May the angels lead you into paradise, Des.
