Dear Beryl and Family
Deepest Sympathy. Lots of great memories playing rugby with John for Opunake seniors. One that stands out and showed the character of "Smoothie" was myself as an 18 yr old called up to the seniors at halftime because of an injury and in the first lineout i heard Smoothie say "Chunky you hit that young fella and it will be the last thing you'll ever do". Smoothie was playing number 6 and I was number 5 against Waimate. I never forgot the good fellow he was and went on to play many years together. A true gentleman who I was sorry not to farewell as I was overseas. Thoughts are with you Beryl, Tim and Sarah and family.
RIP Smoothie

John "Smoothie" Walker, friend, neighbour, teammate and regular opponent in many a robust exchange of opinions and discussions, on life, politics and in particular rugby and cricket.
Smoothie had strong opinions on team selections, team tactics, referee and umpires decisions, and was happy to share and debate his opinions with anyone who would take up the challenge.
A real character and good mate.
Condolences to Beryl and family. Our thoughts are with you all.
