Laurie, Evelyn and their children were neighbors for many years in Mangorie Rd. Both Evelyn and Laurie were lovely kind people and I have great memories, many of which involved laughter. Nothing was too much trouble and advice was always gently and kindly given. The world was a better place with Evelyn and Laurie in it.

I want to share a story about my Dad, I didn't have the chance or felt the need to on the day of his service.
Some of you may remember this, some may not, but it perplexed both me and my brother. It appeared that Dad had no idea that there was a 1st gear in his Van. Without pause every morning before he left for work there was the ringing sound of the engine turning over and over - whining before it lurched into second gear and rolled down our long driveway. And then again as he exited the gate onto Mangorei Road.
I´m sure this played a factor in this next story.
It appeared he may have rolled out of an intersection on Coronation Ave similarly. But perhaps not giving an adequate distance to the vehicle travelling from his left. The driver of this vehicle took offence to this and followed Dad all the way home. Dad drove up the driveway and was surprised to see the vehicle do the same. The occupant then got out of his car and approached Dad, waving a broken bottle and shouting obscenities. It was only when he noticed Dad in his black singlet, wide-shouldered and bulging with well-worked muscles from his years of swinging a hammer that the occupant took a hasty return to his vehicle and sped off.
Thanks, Dad for your genes. Whenever I grimace, I'll always think of you.
Cheerio Dad.

Dear Brent and Family....fondest memories during our days..many years ago, with the Taranaki Hunt Club. Your beautiful quiet gentle Dad..on his big bay Standy..if memory's still intact.. .was always there ready to give anyone a good safe lead over a fence or hedge at any time. Laurie was always and ever the gentleman on the Hunt field. What a grand age he reached. Be proud you kids of your lovely Dad..may he rest well having done a good job on earth. Kindest Regards to you all in you time of loss. XXOO

Sympathies to the Cockerill family on the loss of Laurie. I knew him through racing and hunting and always enjoyed his company. He had a great work ethic, was reliable and an expert in his craft as a farrier. Thoughts are with you.
