Deepest sympathy to all the Roach family from the Johnston family. Our families have always been very close growing up together on the Opua Road. We remember with fondness the many wonderful times on the farms; school activities; sports ; holidays together & the many special occasions. Jean was always so supportive & encouraging in all ways. Jean was also a huge supporter of anything to do with Opunake as well as her family. She will be greatly missed by us all.

In my early childhood Jean saved me from drowning in their pool after I jumped in a little enthusiastically, for which I am very grateful.

One of the most memorable events of my middle childhood was an unaccompanied flight from Timaru to Opunake at 11 years of age to stay with Aunty Jean and Uncle Pete for two weeks. It was 1985 and Peking Man had just released "Room that Echoes" which was No.1 for several weeks. I felt so at home: Pete took me milking and Jean took me around the district including various beaches and the Maui gas refinery. I rode motorbikes and roamed the farm with a BB gun - what more could a child ask for? I think of that trip to this day.

I returned Opunake in later years with my own family and Jean always made us feel welcome. Our thoughts are with the boys and families.

It is with deep sadness to hear of the death of Jean. A very special lifelong friend both in teaching .Knowing Pete and keeping track of family growing up, gardening fun times..A special memory was a trip to Auckland for your Birthday to see Simon Garfunkel..Jean you shared so much with me at O.H.S.always supporting me in my mad productions and my ideas.Encouraging me to help in Maori till we got a teacher. introducing me to a chocolate machine. The Arts. I was looking froward to 2025.reunion. I will miss you and thank you for sharing your life's adventures with me. Forever in my heart. and in my garden where cuttings are now bushes. It will be hard to drive past Opua on the way to Opunake. and not stop for G &T a swim, a garden walk putting the world to right and Aroha..Blessings dear friend.

I still remember the excitement at OHS when two young and adventurous female teachers arrived from the UK in the early 60's. It was a very, very big event! I was never taught by 'Miss Slater' but I do know that she was always held in particularly high regard by students and also by her fellow staff members, including my own father, Bill Wotton. It was a pleasure to meet her by chance at occasions over the intervening years. She had a great memory, was always charming and obviously contributed to Opunake and the district in many ways. She will be remembered with admiration, respect and affection. My sympathy is with all those who knew and loved her at every stage.

On my first day of Highschool on a beautiful Opunake summer day, at the first morning break, I met teacher Jean Slater at the corridor steps beside room three. Cup of tea in hand, those beautiful blue eyes complemented a lovely english accent as she stood at the top of the steps requesting an explanation to "where you three little boys think you are going". Jean has played a big part of the Opunake district over the years. My sincere condolences to you her whanau and also to her friends who were alongside her. Arohanui Jean- may you rest in peace

Deepest sympathy to the Roach family,
I first meet Jean when she joined the Taranaki fringe garden trust, we got to know one another over the yrs we were on the committee together,I all ways enjoyed her sense of humour and no nonsense approach to get things sorted, she had a high standard which she expected of others as well,
