Mary Read, my dearest friend, adopted nana, biggest supporter and my absolute favourite client to look forward to seeing.
Mary has been with me since my apprenticeship at suede, we shared many stories, turns out Mary was a long time family friend, pictured, is my great grandfather Joseph Hartley, walking Mary down the isle. She told me stories of him and his wife Ida. About huirora (probably spelt wrong sorry!) her childhood, and how she helped in the community.
She was also generous enough to give me her original photographs of her wedding so I can copy them and have my very own, a week later she received them back, along with the same copies and a coloured version of her big day.
She bragged non stop about her children, grandies and friends. She so so devoted to everyone and had a heart so big she always boasted about her achieving grandchildren with Kieran always being mentioned. She even told me a big secret that he was coming to see her with his brothers at Elizebeth R, she was so happy she couldn´t stop talking about it and all their achievements.
Over the years she has gifted me with hand made crafts. She was quite the artist including in Stratford floral art, many of her friends have told me stories of her, she´s even had her famous news articles that she was absolutely chuffed with. Every year we gifted each other a small birthday and Christmas gift to show our love and appreciation for one and other.
Mary also helped shape Hairvana, she´s given me countless advice in what to do, we bounced ideas off each other, every Wednesday I´d call her and see if she would be a menace to the streets on her scooter or if I would be picking her up, Wednesday 1pm was Mary´s time if she felt upto par. We spent the hour together and it was never long enough. Followed by a cuddle, kiss on the cheek "I´ll see you next week, love you".
Although Mary never let me colour her hair pink like I always joked about... she never stopped letting me how proud she was, how she loved me and my shop how "fantastic " it was to see me from day one behind the chair to now, Funnily enough, Mary also op shopped my old wallet, just like with Joseph, she once again made a full circle. Mary is an incredible woman, and her presence will be missed. I could go on for hours about my dear mary.
Mary,
Thinking of you, wherever you are, wherever you go. We pray our sorrows to end and hope that our hearts will blend. Starting a new journey may not be so hard, or maybe it has already begun. There are many worlds and we all share the same sky.
Love Makayla Hartley, your friend, hairdresser, love you.

The Strathmore Golf Club would like to acknowledge the passing of their much loved and valued member, Mary Read. Mary was one of life's characters and her wit and cheerfulness will be sorely missed by all. Mary and her late husband, Bruiser, contributed much to the club over many years and have been instrumental in the club's success. The club extends their condolences and love to Mary's family.
