Leroy J. Yeckley
Sep 30, 1932 - Sep 9, 2025
Sandusky
Leroy Joseph Yeckley, 92, residing in Sandusky, passed away peacefully in his sleep Tuesday, September 9, 2025.
Leroy was born September 30, 1932, in Castalia, to the late Albert and Lydia (Ghrulke) Yeckle.
Leroy graduated from Margaretta High School in 1950. He is believed to have been the last living member of his graduating class. Following graduation, Leroy was inducted into the U.S. Army, initially serving in the 1st Cavalry and 101st Airborne Division as an MP, and later as a motor pool mechanic and chauffeur to senior staff, stationed primarily in Tokyo and Sapporo, Japan. Upon his honorable discharge and return to the U.S. he held a variety of jobs until taking over the family business in 1957 following the death of his father. He operated Hi-Way Auto Wrecking until his retirement in 1987 following the death of his wife, Molly.
In his retirement, he led an active life of domestic and international travel to locations including Panama, Costa Rica and Mexico. He was a dedicated volunteer for Humane Society of Erie County and served in a variety of roles, primarily as coordinator of the weekly bingo fundraiser. For many years, the flowers he kept were appreciated by his neighbors at the Sheffield Village Apartments. A peaceful and optimistic man, he was well-liked by all who knew him and lived a happy life more than 35 years beyond his own expectations. He was grateful for the ability to live independently in his final years and was in good health at his passing. He mourned the loss of many friends who had died before him, and although he was looking forward to the future, he was also at peace with the expectation of his own passing.
He is survived by his son, Alexander John Yeckley of Castalia; granddaughters, Lydia Catherine Yeckley of Camarillo, California, Cecilia Lily Yeckley of Perrysburg, and Jacquelyn Rose Yeckley of Castalia.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Molly Jean (Wilke) Yeckley, who he married in 1957; his sisters, Marion Hurst in 2017, Florence Fitz in 1999 and Dorothy in infancy.
