I have heard this news much too late and hope my message of condolence reaches Nick´s family. I remember babysitting some of you over the years!
I can speak for my father (Ian McLean) who know valued Nick as a teacher, a deputy, a choir and school opera promoter and as a colleague and friend. They kept in contact over the years.
As a former pupil I remember a fantastic teacher who teased me relentlessly but was also encouraging and caring when it was needed. I loved Geography, I loved the choir, I loved the productions. What a dynamo he was.
Rest easy Nick, you have earned it.

Have fond memories of working for Nick at Tararua College back in the 1980s, thanks Nick for being a considerate boss. I remember part of the interview with a job description that may have included straightening nails or using a left handed hammer :) Condolences from us both, Anne & Ian Cumming

My sincere condolences to Nicks family
I have fond memories of Nick. Over time you remember only a handful of teachers, generally the exceptional ones. Nick was right up there with the best.
Nick was a talented man with a keen sense of humour, a hint of mischief and an immense passion and drive to achieve. This package was most evident when it came to school productions.
The school production bought together all sorts of talent (Costumes, make up, lighting, sets, production, singers etc) and above all teamwork. It added a special dimension to the school year.
I was lucky enough to be part of the HMS Pinafore team and still have the musical score and the programme.... which says something about the importance I placed on that memory.
I benefitted greatly from having Nick in my life.
He was a special man. Rest in Peace Nick

Last time I saw Nick was in 2010 at the 50th Anniversary reunion at Tararua College. I was surprised to see him.

When I was a student there (1964 - 1966) Nick tried very hard to teach us to sing. As to just how successful he was is anyone's guess.

Fond memories of school choir/performances with Nick when at school and then later as a supportive principal and colleague when I returned to teach at Tararua College in the late 80's. Thoughts are with all the family

So very sorry to hear of Nicks (Mr. Gaudin, Sir etc) passing. He was an excellent teacher, head master, choir master and boss. I also recall his strong involvement in sport...rugby and cricket, in particular. The Gilbert and Sullivan operas and our brilliant choir are very proud moments. The only time I ever saw him a little out of his depth was when he took a large group through to Palmerston North to see a ballet performance. He actually blushed when the lead male danced and we all burst into silly giggles. I still laugh about that moment nearly 57 years later. It was a pleasure to see him and Jain many years later at Mystery Creek when Jain was promoting the school she headed in New Plymouth and he easily remembered who I was. Tararua College was fortunate to have him as both a staff member and Principal and we were also fortunate to be taught by him...even though he once told me I would easily survive if lost in the desert for six months. He later employed me to work at the college...a job and time I really enjoyed. My condolences to all his family.
