Died peacefully at home, in his 76th year. Son of Sir Russell and Lady Matthews (deceased), dearly loved partner of Seng Cheah, much loved brother and brother-in-law of Elizabeth (Matthews) and Dave (deceased), Benney (Boston, USA), Jill (deceased) (Matthews), and John Caughey (Wanaka), and John and Lynda Matthews (New Plymouth), and much loved uncle and great-uncle to his many nephews and nieces. In line with Richard's wishes no funeral will take place and a private cremation has already occurred.

I Only just found out that Richard has died, I was kid calling in after school to Dads (Phil Broadbents) workshop on the way home, always delighted to see Richard and Seng, so lovely. I remember going to Richards shop in Remuera.
Our family passes on our love and deepest respect.
Seng if you like Phil would love a natter. All our love, the Broadbent family

Dear Seng,
Our love and condolences go out to you for the loss of Richard. He was a fun, and talented cousin to have. I remember his art as a kid which inspired me esp. his painting for Edgar. When he came around home he was always offered the piano to play. There was much laughter and frivolity. He will be well remembered.

Richard was the best kid brother anyone could wish to have. Talented, very funny, a great pianist, incredible businessman ... and so loyal to all of his family and friends.
And you Seng, gave him many years of such happiness, and incredible help in his failing years.
I plan on planting a remembrance tree here, in Massachusetts's, and next to the Dogwood I have already planted in memory of our very special sister, Jill.
