I first met Gary 40 years ago through a couple of young fellas who had gravitated to the Salvation Army in Tauranga and brought me along on a trip from Auckland. Although I´m no longer in touch with said young fellas, I adopted Gary, Maureen and Jodi on the spot! And still call them family today. Rest with Michael now honey. Love always to you Maureen, Jodi and family, from Taylor and I in Sydney. You are in our thoughts.

Sad news Maureen and family. Memories of times now gone by become easy to recall. A more likeable affable and friendly man would be hard to find. A key strength of his ministry were surely the lessons he learnt from his life experiences which translated to his amazing ability to relate to those he was called on to serve. He was one with us. My sincere condolences to each and every one of you 'The Ashton Family'- May God hold you all in the palm of His hand.

Both Gary & Maureen (commonly known to my son Eli & Daughter Jorja) as Hawera Nana & Poppa.
They have been an important part of our lives for 25 years now (heck...has it been that long..!).
To me personally, Gary has been a person that is like a strong kauri tree, wide in girth like a kauri tree (LOL) but an ora about him. He radiant's love, caring and is one of wisdom. Silently spoken and always with a smile or laugh. He has raised his kids with bountiful love of which Jodi has embedded within her children and has been passed onto the Moko's.
I have been very fortunate to have had Gary in my life. Never judgmental...
Although there is a void left with Gary's passing, he has left a legacy within his off-spring that will be cultivated for years to come in future generations.
We share your loss Maureen (Nana) but are fortunate enough to have been welcomed into your family.
We love you and will always love you all.
