Winnifred Garnett Obituary
Winnifred "Winnie" Garnett, age 87, entered into the presence of her Savior on Friday, November 14, in Kansas City, Missouri. Born in Wichita, Kansas to Ed and Mary Rawlins, Winnie grew up with a heart for helping others. After graduating from Newton High School in 1956, she pursued her calling in nursing and enrolled at Halstead Hospital's nursing school, she was the first African American student who attended the nursing school. Though the training was strict, Winnie often shared how the nuns were supportive and kind.
Winnie dedicated more than 43 years to caring for patients at Halstead Hospital, remaining there until its closure. Her love for nursing was so deep that she maintained her license until the age of 80. On January 23, 1959, Winnie married her high school sweetheart, Floyd "Skippy" Garnett. Their beautiful union lasted 63 years until his passing in 2022, and together they raised five children.
In retirement, Winnie embraced life fully. She enjoyed traveling with her daughter and rediscovered her artistic side through crocheting, knitting, sewing, and creating jewelry to share and sell. Her greatest joy was spending time with her beloved grandchildren, whom she adored and spoiled. Preceding her in death, her beloved husband Skippy and sons Eldon and Kevin. Winnie is survived by her daughter Dee, son Steven (Deana), and grandchildren, Jeffrey, KJ and Jayden.
