New Plymouth Club Remembering Trevor F Downing
It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Trevor Downing, one of the New Plymouth Club´s most influential presidents and a man who left an indelible mark on our Club´s history.
Trevor first served as president from 1974 to 1978, and again from 1983 through to 1991. It was during that second term that his leadership truly saved the Club. In the early 1980s, the Club faced severe financial difficulty and was on the brink of closure. Trevor stepped back in, took stock of the situation, and-with his trademark confidence and steady hand-brought the Club back from the edge.
He restructured the management team, rebuilt morale, and led a major turning point for the Club: the purchase of the upper floors and front car park from the council, which paved the way for the first major renovation project. That $2 million transformation brought the Club upstairs to the wonderful space and view we still enjoy today, and it revitalised the membership in a way few thought possible.
Trevor wasn´t just a president-he was a familiar face, a regular in the club, and a good bloke who knew everyone by name. His mix of good humour, sound business sense made him a true leader and a friend to many.
Doug Mitchell, one of the few still around who worked closely with Trevor at the time, summed it up perfectly:
"He was a great bloke. Quite simply, without him the Club wouldn´t be here today. He stepped in and rescued it when no one else could, and I want to thank him for all the years of dedication he put into the place."
Trevor was a Club man through and through, also serving as the regional representative for New Zealand Chartered Clubs-known today as Clubs New Zealand Inc
We owe Trevor Downing a huge debt of gratitude for his years of leadership, vision, and commitment. The New Plymouth Club stands strong today because of his efforts.
May he rest in peace.
