Joe Mayes Obituary

Youngstown--Mr. Joe "Skip" Henry Mayes, 77, of Youngstown, departed this life peacefully on the evening of Monday, June 30, 2025, at Continuing Healthcare of Boardman. Mr. Mayes was born on December 4, 1947 in Youngstown, the son of the late Morris and Mary Mayes. After graduating from The Rayen High School, he proudly served in the United States Air Force and was later honorably discharged. Joe later graduated from barber college and enjoyed a successful career as a respected barber for over 30 years in the community. He was the owner of Mayes Barber Shop, Youngstown, Ohio, having inherited the business from his late parents. Joe was an avid golfer, pool player and bowler. He also enjoyed watching classic old western television shows. He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Mrs. Patricia A. Mays, of Youngstown. He also leaves to cherish his memory, two sons, Joseph D. Hayden of Youngstown and David C. Storey of Warren; one daughter, April L. Storey-Cornelius (Jermaine) of Girard; two granddaughters, Reign A. Bruno of Austintown and Erilynn M. Stevens of Girard; one grandson, Jermaine L. Cornelius, Jr. of Hermitage; three great-granddaughters, Kai'Marie Henderson and Amarah Tinker, both of Austintown, and Synayah D. Cooper of Girard; one brother, Rudolph (Rudy) Alford of Youngstown; one uncle, Fred Bankston of Youngstown; cousins, Rufus Bankston and Robert Bankston, both of Youngstown; and a host of other family members and dear friends from near and far, who will mourn his loss, yet rejoice in his everlasting peace. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Morris Mayes and Mrs. Mary Mayes. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, July 27, 2025 from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon at the Rossi Brothers and Lellio Funeral Home, 4442 South Avenue, Boardman, Ohio 44512. Full Military Honors 21-Gun Salute and Playing of Taps will take place at 12:00 noon provided by the great men of V.FW. Post 9571 of Ellsworth. A Memorial Homegoing Celebration will follow immediately at the funeral home, with Minister Richard Lampley II officiating and delivering the sermon.
