Alice Lumpkin Obituary

Windsor, Connecticut Alice Jean Cornish Lumpkin, beloved aunt, educator and community leader, daughter of the late Rev. Sampson J. and Maybelle Cornish was born on May 12, 1940, in Hartford, CT. The angels lifted her home on April 3, 2025. Alice lived a life filled with passion, dedication and service to others. A proud graduate of Middletown High School class of 1958 Alice made history as the first Black cheerleader. She recently was mistress of ceremonies for her 65th class reunion. She continued her education at Hampton University where she was one of the divine nine in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc, where she graduated in 1962 with a degree in physical education. She later received her graduate degree from Central Connecticut State College in Spanish. Believing in service, she went to South America to serve in the Peace Corp where she perfected her Spanish. Her professional life was marked by her dedication to education. Alice taught Spanish and Physical Education at New Britain High School, where she also served as Chairwoman of the Spanish Department. She created and coached the volleyball team. Alice was deeply passionate about teaching and continued to give back to the community through tutoring and adult education, including teaching in Springfield. She was a lifelong learner herself, and her commitment to education extended far beyond the classroom. Alice was an avid bowler, participating in leagues since 1973, and she was on the Board of Directors of the Greater Hartford Women's Bowling Association. She was also a member of the Insurance City Senate. She was inducted into the 2012 Greater Central Connecticut Hall of Fame for Bowling ability and Meritorious Service. In addition to her professional and personal accomplishments, Alice was a faithful member of the Faith Congregational Church, where she was a trustee and on numerous committees. She was a basketball fan of the UConn's men and women's teams. As well the Connecticut Sun. Her love included: Scrabble, crossword puzzles, traveling and reading the newspaper. Alice was united in marriage to the late Harold Lumpkin in 1969, and together they created a legacy of love and commitment. She was preceded in death by her son, Derek M Lumpkin, whom she loved dearly. Alice is survived by her beloved sister, Mildred Davis; sister-in-law, Edith Cornish and Elizabeth Cornish; and host of nieces, nephews and godchildren who cherished her deeply. She was preceded in death by her siblings: Robert, Norma, Beatrice, David, James, Charles, Arthur and Donald. The family will receive friends and relatives Saturday April 12, 2025, 10:00 – 11:00 AM at the Faith Congregational Church 2030 Main St. Hartford, CT 06120 with a Funeral Service to follow. The burial will be at a later date, at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in Alice's Honor to Hampton University. Thank you Mrs. Lumpkin for being a dedicated, caring and loving Spanish teacher at New Britain High School. You were my first African American teacher whom I looked up to with pride. You always modeled excellence and professionalism. You pushed me to be the best person I could be! Your caring and loving spirit will truly be missed. Love you.

I worked with Alice at New Britain High School in the 70´s. My first born son and her beloved son Derek were born in November 1977 and we shared many fun filled afternoons with or sons sharing laughs about being first time mothers and comparing notes. I will always remember Alice for her beautiful smile and laugh, endless joy and positivity. She is a light that will never be extinguished. My condolences to her family.

Ms. Lumpkin was my favorite Spanish Teacher at NBHS in 1990! She was a great role model, very sweet, but she also had high expectations for her students and pushed us to study hard. Prayers for her family and friends.
