Catherine Carter Obituary
Catherine J. Carter, 94, of Newington, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2025. Born in Curtis Bay, MD, daughter of the late Col. Andrew Boulia and Mary (Denver) Boulia, Catherine was raised in West Springfield, MA, where she formed the early roots of a life devoted to family, faith, and community.
It was during her time working at Colonial Ice Cream in West Springfield that she met her husband, Richard H. Carter. The two married and shared 54 wonderful years together until his passing in 2004. In 1962, Catherine and Richard settled in Newington, where they embarked on a new journey together, purchasing Frito franchise routes in Hartford. She was also employed at Woolworth's Dept. Store. While raising their family, Catherine became deeply involved in the Newington community. She was a devoted parishioner of St. Mary's Church, a proud member of the Ladies Guild, and taught religious education to generations of local children. Catherine also had a craft business and shared her love of crafting by teaching others how to make beautiful handmade creations, especially dolls. She was a devoted UCONN basketball and Red Sox fan.
She had a heart for service and community serving as a den mother for the Scouts in both West Springfield and Newington. Catherine was longtime member of the Newington Senior Center, as well as a vibrant presence in local bowling leagues, earning many trophies and friends along the way.
A gifted seamstress, she lovingly created costumes for countless young dancers, including her daughter, through Diane's School of Dance. Her creativity, generosity, and warmth touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. During her years of working at the Newington before and after school program she enjoyed working with the children on many arts and crafts projects.
Above all, Catherine was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She leaves her seven children, Catherine Pizzuto and her husband Russell of OH, Gary Carter of MA, Janis Spooner of Colchester, Louise Dieboldt of Willington, James Carter of RI, Elizabeth Martin and her husband William of Newington and Andrew Carter of Newington, 15 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. She also leaves her sister Elizabeth Mizzoni of RI, and her daughter-in-law, Mary Carter of Plainville and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son Steven Carter and eight siblings, Leona, Paul, Andrew, Mary, Arthur, Bernadette, Virginia, and George. Her legacy lives on in the family she cherished and the lives she enriched through her kindness, faith, and love.
The family wishes to give thanks to Middlewoods of Newington for proving a safe and loving home and to Jefferson House for excellent care during her final year.
